‘I don’t roll on Shabbos’

The fine folks in the Colorado Senate are recognizing that it ain’t kosher for a Jewish school to play on Shabbat, the day of rest.

From The Denver Post.

In a bipartisan show of support for a local Jewish school basketball team,
lawmakers in the Senate this morning urged state athletics officials to push
back a game until after sundown on Saturday.

The boys from Herzl/Rocky Mountain Hebrew Academy basketball team are
currently fighting their way through their high school district playoffs. If the
team wins one more game, it will play for the championships. But the Colorado
High School Activities Association has scheduled that championship game for
during the day on Saturday and has said it won’t move the contest.

The boys’ religious beliefs dictate that they not play between sundown
Friday and sundown Saturday.

If Herzl/Rocky Mountain Hebrew Academy isn’t the most daunting high school name out there, we don’t know what is.

  1. Shomer Shabbos!

  2. Everyone knows that Jews make the best basketball players.

  3. this is like when the NCAA was dumb enough to put BYU in a bracket that played on Sunday. Helloooooo?

  4. People can accomodate to a point. But, none of them- BYU, Herzl/Rocky Mountain Hebrew Academy, whoever- should be able to hide behind their religion in order to have their cake and eat it, too. At some point, they need to make a decision. If they really want to win the championship, they’ll play on Shabbat.

From the cheap seats, I have to say, lighten the fuck up! It’s not like it’s Yom Kippur. Just because God rested on the seventh day- and, since Judaism and Christianity both observe some version of this, it applies to followers of both faiths- doesn’t mean that, in 2008, you get to sit on your ass and do nothing for one day each week.

  5. Clearly you are out of touch since that is EXACTLY what observant Jews do on Shabbos. Nobody is “hiding behind” anything, according to Jewish law such activity is prohibited on Shabbos. Suggesting that one has to compromise ones religious convictions to… win a basketball game is just silly.

Get the facts first, open the mouth second…
